Friendly gamble turns out right for Encinitas woman

ENCINITAS — It seems that you really can get by with a little help from your friends. It certainly worked for one Encinitas resident.
In the second of the early cash drawings, officials of the Ronald McDonald House Dream House raffle drew the ticket bought by Susan Morrison of Encinitas and Florence Klewin of Mystic, Conn. The two longtime friends will be splitting the $25,000 first prize and their ticket remains in the hopper for the big drawing in June for a $1.9 million Encinitas home.
Other lucky winners of early drawings included Ruth Ann Deetz of Solana Beach who won $1,000. To be entered into the next early drawing for $26,000, tickets must be purchased by April 26.
Morrison and Klewin, friends for more than 30 years, decided to buy the raffle ticket when Klewin was making her yearly visit to Southern California from Connecticut. Both women are originally from Mystic and grew up in the same small town. Morrison and her husband have been living in Encinitas for 22 years.
Morrison mentioned to her friend that she wanted to buy one of the $150 tickets. but she had just been laid off after 10 years as a corporate event and travel planner, and wasn’t sure she could swing it. Klewin immediately offered to help buy a ticket because, she said, her friend Susan was “lucky.”
Together they bought one ticket and optimistically wrote out a contract stating how they would share the winnings. With perfect foreshadowing, just before they got the news, Morrison was consoling another friend about money troubles and told her “Don’t worry, I’m going to win a lot of money soon!”
“It has been so much fun,” Morrison said. “And having been let go from my job of 17 years in October, it could not have happened at a better time. I feel much better about the future now.”

The fifth annual Dream House Raffle benefiting Ronald McDonald House of San Diego offers the chance to win a 4,600-square-foot coastal estate, with five bedrooms, five-and-a-half-baths, solar power, a gourmet kitchen and a large backyard with a pool and spa. All proceeds will help Ronald McDonald House of San Diego provide a new “home away from home” to families of sick children.
Ronald McDonald House expects to sell out 35,000 tickets to this fifth annual event for charity. The grand prize winner can choose between the house or $1.6 million cash. One early drawing remains with the next drawing deadline on April 26 for $26,000 in cash prizes to be given out to three lucky ticket buyers on May 6. The grand prize drawing is on June 20. All ticket holders have a one-in-100 chance of winning a prize of $300 or more.
Those who purchase more than one ticket are eligible for the multi-ticket drawing to win a Toyota Prius or $25,000 cash, a European vacation or $10,000, or a Hawaiian vacation or $5,000. If ticketholders refer a friend to purchase a ticket, they will be included in the refer-a-friend drawing and given the chance to win $15,000.
Proceeds for the raffle will go to operate a new 47-bedroom Ronald McDonald House now under construction across from Rady Children’s Hospital. The new 65,000-square-foot home for families with seriously ill children in the hospital will have four times the number of bedrooms than the current House.
Completed in spring 2009, it will serve as a much-needed resource for the community as the critical need for services for these families grows.
