Student creations focus of annual fundraiser

DEL MAR — Del Mar Hills Academy of Arts and Sciences celebrated the creativity of its students with its annual dinner and live art auction at En Fuego Cantina & Grill in Del Mar March 7.
Attended by nearly 200 parents and teachers, the event raised approximately $30,000 for programs at the school, particularly salaries for Science, Music, Art, and Technology, or SMaRT, teachers, and physical education. The focus of the live auction was the works of art created by the students. Each grade created curriculum-relevant projects. Silent auction items included painting ceramics with the first grade teachers or VIP seats at sixth-grade graduation. Get-away auction items included trips to Sedona, Ariz. and a few local hotel stays. There were also restaurant gift certificates, rounds of golf, and local services from area merchants.
First-grade students used their new expertise in simple maps, cardinal directions and map symbols to create a photo “quilt” representing Del Mar. Students took the photos and then arranged more than 3,000 photos of Del Mar landmarks as well photos of students and Del Mar Hills Academy. Parents generously bid on the project and it was donated back to the school and will soon be on display. Other student-created projects included a decoupage “alphabet” mirror from kindergarten while fifth graders created a terra-cotta planter decorated with tiles stamped with inspirational words about our country based on their American Revolution studies. Sixth-grade students undertook a creative writing exercise, which inspired a collage of sketches in ink. Fourth-graders painted tiles representing the many trees of Del Mar.
