Green Week coming to Oceanside

OCEANSIDE — Oceanside is hosting Green Week 2009 from March 16 through March 21 at the Oceanside Public Library and Civic Center. Free events throughout the week will promote community environmental awareness through educational programs. The first Green Fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon on March 21 at the Oceanside Civic Center. The Green Fair will include children’s activities, vendors, a free electronics drop-off event and free goodies.
Each day during Green Week there will be programs and activities to teach families how to be better stewards of the planet with recycling, composting, water conservation, and preventing water pollution.
In addition to the educational programs, students throughout Oceanside in grades K through 12 will be participating in two environmental contests. The “Green Oceanside” Bookmark Contest will print winning designs for distribution in various city environmental programs and to City Council. The “Recycling Challenge” has classrooms competing to collect the most cans and plastic bottles during the week and deliver those recyclables to the Green Fair. The winning class earns a lunch party for their entire classroom. Details are available at any Oceanside Unified School District school and at the Oceanside Public Library Children’s desk.
Educational programs hosted at the library include special evening programs Monday through Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Children’s Room. Topics include water conservation and protection, recycling, and a visit with author Karen Farmer, author of “My Bag and Me.”
Events and activities at the Green Fair include:
— “Recycle Challenge” collection center – Students from Oceanside schools battle for the top of the recycle heap and demonstrate what a week’s worth of recyclables can look like.
— Awards ceremony for Bookmark Contest and Recycle Challenge.
— “Make your own worm bin” – Take some worm’s home and start composting.
— “Plant an herb garden” – Take home your very own herb garden.
— E-World Recyclers will be hosting an electronics drop-off site at the fair. Bring your used electronics to recycle free of charge.
— Learn about the “Rise above Plastics” campaign and membership/volunteer opportunities at the Surfrider booth.
— Booths with take-home goodies and environmental resources, like free reusable bags and informational pamphlets and much more.
Green Week is sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library; the city of Oceanside Solid Waste & Recycling Division; Water Utilities Department’s Water Conservation and Clean Water Programs; Waste Management of North County; El Corazon Compost Facility; Surfrider Foundation; E-World Recyclers; MiraCosta College; San Diego Gas & Electric; and College Bound Cans.

This event is awesome! Finally a City that truly supports environmental awareness and education. And how can you go wrong with free goodies. I am really looking forward to the free reusable bags. Its about time a City supports their community. I am bringing my drum for the drum circle. Thank goodness for a bit of culture.
