Well-spoken students vie for scholarships

CARLSBAD — Rachel Latterich of San Marcos won first place in the Pacific Ridge School second annual Oratory Contest Feb. 3.
Savannah Afsahi of Carlsbad won second place and $100 and Eleanor Lichter of Rancho Santa Fe won third place and $50. Ten ninth-grade students presented formal speeches to students, faculty and friends on various topics of personal interest. The winners were awarded scholarships, which will be applied to the cost of their annual global engagement trip this year to China. Winners also get their name on the Pacific Ridge Oratory Contest plaque at the school.
Students were scored on their delivery, enunciation, displayed knowledge and credibility of the subject, clear understanding of the argument, and ability to connect with the audience. Along with Latterich, Afsahi and Lichter, participants included:
Hannah Dickson of Carlsbad, Cullen Riley of Carlsbad, Aya Kuki of Encinitas, John Hanlon of Rancho Santa Fe, Abby Perelman of San Diego, Stephanie Sapp of Rancho Santa Fe and Trevor Nesbitt of Carlsbad.
