Contest offered for student poets

COAST CITIES — High school student poets from ninth through 12th grade throughout San Diego County are invited to enter their work in the 22nd annual Amy Marie Watkins Memorial Poetry Prize.
Students can submit two poems, each typed on a separate piece of paper. Entries must include the author’s name and grade; the school’s name, address and phone number; and the name plus the address and home phone number of the author’s parent or guardian. E-mail submissions will not be accepted. A first-place prize of $100 and second-place prize of $75 will be awarded.
The Amy Marie Watkins Memorial Poetry Prize, hosted each year by La Jolla Country Day School, is held in honor of Amy Marie Watkins, a former student and talented young poet who died in an automobile accident at the age of 17 on April 2, 1987.
Deadline for entries is March 14. Prize winners will be notified in early June. Winners will also be posted on the school Web site.
In addition this year, student poets entering the Amy Marie Watkins Memorial Poetry Prize will be eligible to attend a special poetry reading and discussion of writing, publishing and the writer’s life from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 7 at La Jolla Country Day School with Ilya Kaminsky, poet and author. Kaminsky is an English professor at San Diego State. Students interested in attending should indicate their interest in writing on their contest entries and include a working e-mail address. Since seating is limited, interested students will be chosen on the basis of the overall quality of their poems and on seating availability. Eligible students will be notified via e-mail by Bruce Boston, from Country Day’s English Department.
