Budget crisis threatens to end STAR program

COAST CITIES — As lawmakers try to reach a budget deal, services to children with autism are threatened by the potential for IOUs to be issued by the state. STAR Program, Inc., a socialization training program for children diagnosed with autism, receives all of its’ funding from the state through the Regional Center system. Inaction by the legislature will result in the inability of the Regional Center to continue to pay for these services.
STAR currently serves 100 children on school sites during after-school hours. Children between the ages of 5 and13 attend social playgroups with typical and special needs peers to learn and practice play skills and learn how to solve social problems as they arise. The San Diego Regional Center provides the funding for this program.
