ENCINITAS — Dinner has gone to the dogs at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. The shelter kicked off its inaugural program Dinner with the
Dogs on Jan. 16 with plans to continue the program through September.
The new, bimonthly event allows children ages 5 and older to tour the facility, make themed crafts for the shelter pets, play with the animals and enjoy a pizza dinner while the dogs dine on canine delicacies.
Shelter representative Erin Gorence said she had no trouble filling the 15 available spaces for participants. “We had some returning campers from our summer programs and did marketing through community calendars,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of animals that the kids can interact with.”
The excitement was building as the staff prepared for the arrival of the children. Always a hub of activity, the shelter provides pet lovers with various opportunities to learn about animals and care for them on a volunteer basis.
In the 40 years since opening its doors, the nonprofit shelter has grown from a small volunteer-run facility to a professionally managed humane society that provides quality shelter care, adoption services, education programs for adults and children as well as an animal safe-house program for the survivors of domestic violence.
