San Diego Sockers are back again

DEL MAR — The San Diego Sockers, one of the most successful indoor soccer teams in the sport’s history, are hoping the third time’s a charm. Purchased by David Pike and Carl Savoia in August, the team will begin its third revival playing at the renovated Del Mar Arena as part of Premier Arena Soccer, a 54-team, 10-division national league.
A passion for local professional sports and a desire to give back to the community prompted Pike to buy the team, which began in 1974 as the Baltimore Comets. A year later, the group moved to San Diego and was renamed the Jaws. The team relocated to Las Vegas in 1977, but returned to Southern California a year later, when it was ultimately christened the San Diego Sockers.
Ten-time champions in the Major Indoor Soccer League and North American Soccer League between 1982 and 1992, the team folded first in 1996. It was revived in 2001 but financial woes led to its second demise in 2004.
Led by head coach and former player Phil Salvagio, the Sockers will kick off the season at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Del Mar Arena, which is currently undergoing a $14 million upgrade that should be completed in March.
Additional games are scheduled for Nov. 19 and Nov. 21, and Dec. 5, Dec. 28 and Dec. 30. Six games are also scheduled in January, February and March 2010.
A contest will be held to select a fight song, and the team is planning a meet-and-greet next month. Visit http://www.sdsockers.com/ for more information.

Are the Sockers playing the PASL Premier league or the PASL Pro League? It was my impression the Sockers were to be part of the PASL Pro League. The PASL Premier has 54 teams, while the PASL Pro League just started this year with eight teams in the U.S. Division.
