MiraCosta College names new president

COAST CITIES — At a special meeting Dec. 23, the MiraCosta College board of trustees announced its selection of Francisco Rodriguez, current president of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, as the college’s next superintendent/president. Rodriguez will assume the post on March 1, taking over from Susan Cota, who will continue as MiraCosta’s interim superintendent/president until Feb. 28.
“The board was very pleased with the work of the search committee,” MiraCosta board President Greg Post said. “They chose three extremely well-qualified finalists, and of these three, Dr. Rodriguez rose to the top. We are excited to have him lead MiraCosta College.”
Rodriguez began his community college career in 1997 at Woodland College in the Yuba Community College District, where he served as associate dean of instruction and student services, and executive dean. In 2003, he became the president of Cosumnes River College. Before beginning his community college career, Rodriguez also worked at UC Davis in Student Affairs for 12 years in various capacities including student outreach and undergraduate admissions, student leadership programs and activities, and diversity education. He holds a doctorate of philosophy in education from Oregon State University, a master’s degree in community development and a bachelor’s degree in Chicano studies, both from the UC Davis.
The Dec. 23 special meeting was called in order to act on a recommendation to approve Rodriguez’s contract. Five of the seven members of the board were present and passed the recommendation unanimously. Members Gloria Carranza and Charles Adams were unavailable for the meeting but had participated earlier this month in the public forum and closed session interviews of the three candidates.
The superintendent/president’s salary is formulated by placement on the academic salary schedule, plus a time and responsibility factor. Rodriguez’s total annual salary will be $256,208. Rodriguez will also receive a monthly allowance of $1,300 for expenses related to the position, including transportation.
MiraCosta College has had two interim superintendent/presidents, John Hendrickson and Susan Cota, since the departure of Superintendent/President Victoria Munoz Richart in June 2007.
