DAR participates in Wreaths Across America

VISTA — Rancho Buena Vista Chapter members of Daughters of the American Revolution participated in the third annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony with Chapter Regent Jeanette Shiel reading a special poem. The ceremony took place Dec. 13 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, located in Point Loma. The U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Merchant Marine personnel each placed a wreath in honor of their fallen comrades. The Red White & Blue Society, Children of the American Revolution, represented the POW/MIA’s. United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego provided a brass quintet, and the rifle detail gave a 21-gun salute. The U.S. Coast Guard made a helicopter fly-over. The wreaths were brought forward through a corridor of American flags provided by the Patriot Guard Motorcycle Riders Club.
Regent Joanne Murphy of the De Anza Chapter organized the event. The Wreaths Across America story began during the holidays more than 15 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Company began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of the nation’s fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery. For the 2008 ceremony, 100,000 wreaths were placed at 350 locations.
