RANCHO SANTA FE — It was a festive holiday celebration that only the Rancho Santa Fe Republican Women Federation can pull off. More than 70 members, spouses and guests filled the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club on Dec. 3, for the annual Classic Christmas Ball. Music, dance, good food and friends — it was everything a ball should be.
The evening began as members gathered for cocktails and conversation. Prior to dinner, President Susan Woolley introduced honored guests, including Assemblyman Martin Garrick and his wife, Jane; and former state senator Bill Morrow and his wife, Barbara. Woolley, who will continue to serve as president, then swore in the new 2009 slate of officers.
After dinner, Master of Ceremonies Steve Lewandowski warmed up the audience with some holiday wit. He introduced guest speaker Helen L. Beardsley, who gave a “History of our Early Presidents” with a unique and festive point of view through the use of White House Christmas Ornaments. During the Ronald Reagan and H.W. Bush administrations, Beardsley worked as a volunteer in the White House Greeting Office where she assisted with the hand addressing of the White House Christmas cards each year. For several years she personally hand addressed the envelopes, in calligraphy, for President and Mrs. Bush. The Rancho Santa Fe Republican ladies were impressed with the lovely selection of ornaments Beardsley had on display. “These aren’t ornaments, they’re more like Faberge eggs!” Woolley said.
The Jack Wheaton Quartet provided holiday music after dinner and guests worked off their dessert calories by dancing the night away. “Let’s Have a Ball” was the theme of the evening and that’s exactly what everyone had — a ball!
