OCEANSIDE — In a unanimous vote, City Council put a tighter lid on high-density occupancy of single-family dwellings and prohibited “mini dorms” in single-family neighborhoods.
The newly modified ordnances limit the number of renters to four people, unless they are a family unit, and call for an adequate amount of privacy and open space.
The idea is to protect the integrity of single-family residence communities from mini dorms, which invite an unhealthy number of people to live in the same household and often produce noise problems and over parking.
“I feel strongly about maintaining the integrity of the single-family community,” Councilwoman Esther Sanchez said.
Area norms used in dealing with mini dorms in Orange, Lompoc and San Diego were reviewed and the stiffest regulations were adopted by Oceanside, City Attorney John Mullen said.
“The strictest measure is what I’d like to do,” Councilman Jack Feller said.
