RANCHO SANTA FE — Malcolm Tovey, director of coaching for the Rancho Santa Fe Attack, and his Boys U-15 Green team, achieved great success during the 2008 soccer season. It began with back-to-back Summer Tournament Championships and ended with a thrilling victory at the Premier Qualifying Tournament.
The Attack team’s first accomplishment was winning the Coronado Crown City Classic on Aug. 3. The championship game was played against a strong team and rival, the Oceanside Breakers. Not only did the Attack U-15 Boys win the game with a final score of 1-0; but they also did not allow one goal to be scored against them for the entire tournament. The Attack team continued to dominate the Breakers during the regular season, when they won both games with scores of 3-1 and 1-0.
Malcolm’s men also took home the trophy the following week, when they won the Encinitas Rotary Cup on Aug. 10. They played in the Gold Division and advanced to the finals where they faced a tough opponent and Premier team, the Poway Vaqueros. Once again, the Attack U-15 boys displayed a great team effort when they defeated the Vaqueros, 1-0.
This success continued into Attack’s 2008 fall season, playing in the AAA bracket of the Presidio Soccer League. They ended the season in third place with 10 wins and four losses, and just two points behind a very strong second place team, Atlante SD-Escondido. Attack and Atlante played each other one last time at the Premier Qualifying Tournament in Temecula on Nov. 15. It was a hard-fought game on both sides which ended in a 1-1 tie during regulation play. However, the Attack team prevailed by scoring a goal in the last two minutes of double overtime, with a final score of 2-1. It was a tremendous accomplishment, which earned the Attack team a place in the Premier bracket of the Presidio Soccer League for the 2009 season.
Coach Tovey and his Boys U-15 team are to be congratulated for their many achievements, and they are looking forward to continued success at CalSouth State Cup 2009.
