As I Lay Dying to record local live show for DVD

Super heavy San Diego metal act As I Lay Dying is set to perform a once-in-a-lifetime show for local metal fans in San Marcos on Nov. 17. Members of As I Lay Dying are from areas throughout North County, residing in Escondido and Oceanside. I first had the pleasure of meeting this band back on Warped Tour 2007. Frontman Tim Lambesis was taking interviews with the press backstage and as I waited for one of the press handlers to motion to me that it was time to go in and begin interviewing, Tim walked up. I was lurking just outside the waiting area when he walked past and gave me a nice smile and a nod. He immediately left me with an impression of modesty that’s stuck with me and has turned this once objective observer into a fan.
That could be why the band has been so successful since their 2003 debut “Frail Words Collapse.” The record became an instant hit for Metal Blade records with songs like “Forever,” and “94 Hours” resonating within the burgeoning metal scene. The band members quickly found themselves in a whirlwind of touring, first landing on the 2005 OzzFest tour playing side stage to roaring crowds, then whisked away to the second leg of the winter 2006 Taste Of Chaos Tour, and finally finding themselves headlining the 2006 Sounds of the Underground tour. The band released its latest endeavor, “Oceans Between Us,” in March 2007. The album was quickly devoured by hungry AILD fans and the band enjoyed a successful tour in support of the record. The band was also crowned Artist of the Year by the San Diego Music Awards in September.
But the really big event has been saved especially for their North County fans, a fan base that the band hasn’t forgotten. The band is set to record a string of live performances for an upcoming live DVD release (scheduled for 2009), starting with The Jumping Turtle show on Nov. 17. They will also be playing two other shows in SoCal, one at the Grove in Anaheim (take the train) and another whose date will be announced soon. The band — always happy to get their fans involved — are hosting a contest with Metal Blade records with four winners being randomly selected to receive two spots on As I Lay Dying’s guest list for the show in Anaheim. The winners will get to meet the band, get an autographed copy of “Oceans Between Us” on limited edition vinyl, and a choice of two free items at the AILD merch booth. Go to the band’s MySpace page for more details and how to enter.
The DVD promises to be packed with live footage, backstage antics, and most importantly, a detailed chronicle on the band’s humble beginnings to their explosion on to America’s metal scene.
They will be sharing the stage with fellow San Diego classic rock act Thieves and Liars, whose debut album, “When Dreams Become Reality” was voted Best Rock Album at the San Diego Music Awards, which means its going to be an unforgettable night of good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll that you can bang your head to at The Jumping Turtle.
A band like As I Lay Dying knows never to forget where they came from and the fans that started it all. As front man Tim Lambesis says, “We couldn’t be more excited about this short stretch of shows we have planned in the Southern California area. Playing shows all across Southern California is the perfect framework for our upcoming DVD. We are all proud San Diegans and even more proud of the diehard fans we have extending up the California coast. Each show on this mini tour will be distinctly different so that we capture every side of what As I Lay Dying is all about as well as what we’ve gone through in the seven and half years of our history. These are shows you won’t want to miss.”
Tickets for the all-ages show at the Jumping Turtle are on sale now, for $25 online at www.thejumpingturtle.com. For more information on As I Lay Dying and the contest, visit the band’s MySpace page at www.myspace.com/asilaydying.
