Palomar College launches fundraising campaign

SAN MARCOS — The Palomar College Foundation recently celebrated the beginning of a six-week campaign focused on generating new donors and increased community support for its scholarships and programs.
Since early September, organizers have been busy contacting potential donors and explaining how students benefit from funds raised. The amount of money raised in this campaign will be announced at the foundation’s traditional black tie gala, Palomar Celebrates Community! to be held at the Rancho Bernardo Inn on Nov. 15.
“We organized this campaign with the current shaky state budget in mind, thinking that the students need more help than ever this year,” Foundation President Kerry Ross said. Explaining that the campaign’s goal is modest in its first year, Ross said that the group hopes to raise $150,000 over the six-week period.
“Over the years, the foundation has excelled in presenting outstanding special events, but this is our first endeavor in organizing an annual giving campaign designed to increase support for resources for students and increase Palomar College visibility in the community,” Barbara Swearingen, the campaign chair for 2008, said.
“We are including everyone in our campaign efforts,” Executive Director Richard Talmo said. “We have rolled out a Family and Friends campaign to support our athletic program. Representatives of our Education for Heroes Fund, assisting veterans, are aggressively talking with potential supporters in the defense industry, and our President’s Associates are dedicated to increasing membership and revenue in order to respond to anticipated needs for scholarships and grants on campus.”
Organizers have also instituted a Palomar employee giving program as a part of the campaign. “Often outside organizations respond well when employee giving is significant and we hope that as our employees express support for our efforts, community members will follow suit,” Foundation President Elect Robyn Quaco said.
The Palomar College Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to bring financial support to the Palomar College District. The foundation was organized in 1956 and over the years has provided millions in financial support for Palomar College students and programs. Currently, the Foundation manages assets of nearly $6.5 million.
