Tiger wins, makes history
TORREY PINES — It was a tournament so good they held it over one more day — sort of.
The Farmers Insurance Open, a main draw for San Diego golf, had to finish on Monday due to heavy fog and weather halting play Saturday, delaying what should have been day three of the four-day tournament.
When play resumed Sunday, crowds came in droves despite mud slogs and colder than normal conditions, to see what was billed as one of the strongest fields in the tournament’s recent past.
The field of 54 players managed to complete round three and begin round four Sunday and when play was suspended due to darkness Tiger Woods would take a six-shot lead into Monday’s conclusion.
Woods resumed play Monday with 11 holes to play it still made for a long day with what he described as “slow play” out there. “I started losing my patience out there. It was just so friggin’ slow. We played just over three hours and nine holes, and three of them are par threes. It’s like, come on, you know. I started losing my patience a little bit, and that’s when I made a few mistakes,” Woods said.
Even with the mistakes Woods made off the tee, his lead built up throughout the tournament enabled him to get away with those mistakes. “I’m excited the way I played all week,” Woods said. “I hit the ball well. Pretty much did everything well this week, and built myself a nice little cushion. I had some mistakes at the end. But all my good play before that really allowed me to afford those mistakes.
“We had a couple of hard holes … and 14, 15, if I could get through those I thought it was pretty much over. I made a couple mistakes there, and had a mistake at 17, and I had to grind with it on 18,” he said.
With the win, Woods made history by winning his eighth tournament on one course, which had never been done before.
The 2012 champion Brandt Snedeker finished tied for second with Josh Teater at 10-under. Phil Mickelson finished the tournament tied for 51st with a score of even par.
