I am proud of our Encinitas skateboard and BMX communities. There are a group of young adults like Mr. Barker, who champion sporting opportunities for kids in a rather less conventional fashion than Little League coaches, but they serve as the same sort of positive role models in our community.

When my son was in elementary school, he was involved in BMX biking, and a group of young people at the YMCA helped him to develop confidence and coordination on his BMX bike. He loved BMX.

As a parent, I support these individualized sports for kids since it offers a healthy, creative, social outlet. It is also great when kids can participate in athletic activities that don’t require parents to drive them to practice or attend games.

Since financing the development of the Hall Property has been a problem for 10 years, I suggest that the Skate Park and the Dog Park be given top priority, should the funding for the entire park fall through.
