Big band sound adds some jazz

CARLSBAD — Tickets are available now for the big sound of the Coastal Communities Concert Band is jazzing it up at 2 p.m. Aug. 19, with a concert featuring the Coastal Cities Jazz Band and special guest saxophonist Rob Verdi at the Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St.Verdi, a virtuoso musician, led Disneyland Resort’s house jazz band for more than 20 years. If you enjoy the “Big Band” sound, this is a concert for you. The audience will hear not just one, but two great bands, along with accompaniment by Verdi who will perform on all sizes of saxophones, from a tiny, curved sopranino up to a six-an-one-half-foot tall contrabass.

The program will include such favorites as “A String of Pearls,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Stardust,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Sing Sing Sing,” and “Satin Doll.” Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for seniors and students, and can be purchased in advance by calling (760) 436-6137 or (858) 793-8258. Tickets will also be available at the door.
