City sponsors summer fun

CARLSBAD — The city of Carlsbad Parks & Recreation wants you to know there is still time to sign up for a wide selection of summer activities.If you’re having trouble jump-starting your New Year’s fitness resolutions, July’s the time to do it. Choose from swim, dance, martial arts and other fitness classes. Sign up for a team sport like basketball and for youngsters, it’s not too late to register for summer camps.

Ramping up your fitness routine? Got a triathlon in your bucket list? Sign up for the Carlsbad Triathlon, one of the longest running triathlons in the country. The Carlsbad Triathlon is scheduled at 8 a.m. July 8 at Tamarack State Beach, 7201 Carlsbad Blvd. A Community Wellness Expo is planned from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. July 7 at the Westfield Plaza Camino Real, 2525 El Camino Real, and from 6 a.m. to noon July 8 at the seawall at Tamarack State Beach, 7201 Carlsbad Blvd. Participate in agility tests, a fitness fun zone, screenings and demonstrations for youth, adults and seniors. Learn about nutrition, supplements, clothing and exercise.

Park-sponsored summer camps include cooking, art, adventure, sports, science, the traditional and the not-so-traditional. In addition, check out the classes and lap swim opportunities available this summer at the Monroe Street Pool, 3401 Monroe St. Registration for summer lessons begins July 9 (online registration for residents only) and July 11 (nonresident, mail, phone, walk-in). Summer swim lessons offered on:

— weekdays July 30 to Aug. 10,

— weekdays, Aug. 13 to Aug. 24,

— Saturdays, July 28 to Aug. 25

Don’t feel like taking lessons? Go for open recreation swimming Mondays through Fridays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and 5:45 to 7:30 p.m., or from noon to 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

July Madness includes “The Quibbles and Bits Radio Show.” Carlsbad Senior Playreaders
perform from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. July 19. Join the “studio audience” of a 1940’s style radio show. Carlsbad’s Senior Playreaders will present the next two episodes.

Registration is now open for Snores & S’mores camp-outs at 5 p.m. Aug. 11 and Aug. 12 at Aviara Park, 6440 Ambrosia Lane. Pre-registration is required. Visit [email protected]
