Our year thus far has been fun-filled celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Cardiff-by-the-Sea and even though it is winding down there are still many happenings ahead.
The Friends of the Library kicked off the centennial festivities with a celebration at Besta Wan Pizza, the oldest restaurant in Cardiff, in January, and we wish to thank Becky and her helpers for making it a joyous event.
April found a group gathered to dedicate a Commemorative Garden in Carpentier Parkway with music and refreshments acquired by Linda Lee.
On June 3, Cardiff Elementary School children put together a play about our delightful community which George Berkich was instrumental in helping create.
July 2 found the friends participating in the Cardiff 101 MainStreet festivities in Glen Park. Board members rode in the parade, and furnished water for thirsty guests all day from their booth. Friends member Jim Schuck assembled a beautiful display of historical pictures which can be seen on
friendscardifflibrary.org together with the parade pictures.
The 97th birthday celebration for the library and the annual Dog Days event were held on Aug. 13. The library served cupcakes at their half-price book sale.
On Sept.17 and Sept. 18 Cardiff 101 MainStreet will hold the Cardiff Surf Classic & Rerip Green Fest, at Seaside Reef from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be a pancake breakfast by Cardiff Fire Department from 8 to 10 a.m. both days.
Billy Stern will present Cardiff Composer District History & Musical Performance on Sept. 21 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cardiff Elementary School Auditorium, 1888 Montgomery Ave. Learn about the fascinating history of Cardiff Composer District and twelve composer named streets, then enjoy a musical performance of the composers pieces by one of San Diego’s finest guitar duos. A multimedia history will be narrated by Billy Stern, followed by a musical performance by Fred Benedetti and George Svoboda.
Full Moon Poets entertainment will be a Centennial Poetry Slam at the Cardiff Library Community Room on Oct. 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
On Dec. 1, Friends will join the Cardiff 101 MainStreet annual Kringle Mingle at the Cardiff Town Center, from 4 to 8 p.m for fun, food and Santa. and on Dec. 10, from 9:30 to 3:30 p.m., the Friends annual Book/Bake Sale will be held at the library.
The book selection will be great for Christmas giving and by wearing your London/Paris/Rome/Cardiff-by-the-Sea name drop shirt, you can take home a free book. If you don’t have a shirt, they are available at Postal Annex Plus of Cardiff with proceeds benefiting the library.
In June Debbie Thompson, scholarship chair, honored three deserving students by presenting each with a $1,500 scholarships at a special program in the community room. Friends are pleased and proud to give these scholarships each year with funds raised from our memberships, Book Nook and book sales.
The library addition is completed and we invite you to visit to see the newly enlarged Children’s Area, attend First Wednesdays programs in the enlarged community room, browse our Book Nook for quality books at bargain prices and enjoy the selection of materials your library has to offer besides books.
As usual, friendly, fun people have made the centennial year an extremely pleasant experience leaving no doubt that Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a great place to call home.
