Students gather gifts for animals

DEL MAR — During October, Del Mar Hills Academy first-graders held their second annual Pet Supply Drive.
The three first-grade classes collected donations from the entire student body for the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA — items such as pet food, blankets, pillows, towels, pet beds, toys, pet treats and even newspapers for puppy training.
As donations poured in for the animals, the first-graders used the items as a learning tool. They counted, categorized, graphed and practiced addition skills with the items during math class. The first-grade students ultimately exceeded their goal of 300 collected items. On Nov. 6, teachers Lindsay Farmer and Cristin Ebright took the donations, with the help of three first-graders, to the Humane Society’s North Campus in Oceanside, and got to see some of the goodies put to immediate use.
