VISTA — Gabriel Gaitan, 25, was arrested in Texas on Oct. 19 by San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and charged with the murder of his 2-month old daughter, Elizabeth Gaitan.
On March 5, 2006, baby Elizabeth was taken to Tri-City Medical Center after becoming unresponsive during a bath given to her by her mother, according to Lt. Dennis Brugos of the county’s homicide detail.
She was pronounced dead at 12:04 the following morning.
Originally nothing suspicious was revealed during early investigations into her death, but a post-mortem exam found injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, and the medical examiner’s office determined the manner of death to be a homicide, according to Brugos.
The suspect, Gaitan, was living in Vista at the time of the incident and stationed at a local U.S. Marine Corps base.
Special details leading up to Gaitan’s arrest are being withheld at this time, in order to maintain integrity of the case, according to the sheriff’s department.
