jfzs, you’ve got to be kidding! Has our country become THIS naive to think this girl didn’t know what she’s doing? She is no victim. She should be punished for whipping up a frenzy.

I think she has learned her lesson and survived ..that is the moral of the story..
to pick up stones to throw.. is more about judgement than justice

She may have been the victim of a crime, but she then perpetrated another crime. Her age should be taken into account, of course, but it does not make it any less a crime to lie to law enforcement. What message should we send to other children? That it is OK to lie when you are embarrassed? No. Justice protects us all. She committed a crime and should pay the penalty according to the statutes.

Wow, the turmoil that has ensued. I called an old neighbor who lives up the street from the "incident"; this is close to where we used to live (in the hood). He said on Sunday morning, there just isn’t something right about this… well sure enough there wasn’t.
This is such a hot spot in our community that the 15 year old should have fessed up. However she is still 15. She should serve some serious hours of community service, but she still has to deal with her own conscious.

I hope the girl is not charged with any crime. There are others ways to deal with this.

The police still refer to her as a victim (without the quotation marks used by the previous poster to show a false title, shame on you Stan) because she still is a victim. She is a 15 yr old girl who was lured by an adult man online for sex. Was this a bad choice on her part to see a stranger she met online? Of course. She must have felt victimized and wanted to report statutory rape, or it could have been more serious than statutory we don’t know yet, but as the newspaper article stated said was ashamed because she had been warned of internet dangers by her parents. So this girl made up a false story, albeit an outrageous one too.

Did she think the adult man was same the age as her, after all she only knew what he claimed online? How old was he actually? Did she feel threatened if she didn’t have sex with this adult? Does this man have a prior history as a predator? I don’t know and either does any one else but the police, that’s the point. I hope this child gets the counseling she needs. Besides the obvious trauma of being a victim of a probable internet predator, the teasing and harassment at her school that will she will have to endure for a very long time by some of her peers due to this situation will be bad enough.

Please tell me that this "victim" is facing charges for her lying to law enforcement and false statements.
I think of all the police and sheriff’s deputies who stopped working their regular assignments, and focused on this case – only to discover they’d been lied to. With added presence in one part of town, what was sacrificed elsewhere?
You don’t lie to law enforcement. You don’t file false charges against people. Period. When you do, you suffer the consequences.
