Barbecue on the beach for lifeguard tower

DEL MAR — The Friends of the Powerhouse has a busy spring and summer planned with events designed to help the organization raise funds for the new lifeguard tower and Beach Safety Center.
A new family fun affair, the Tiki Torch Beach barbecue and tile-painting party, will debut from 2 to 7:30 p.m. June 27 at 27th Street. Tile painting will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the at 27th Street lifeguard tower parking lot. Following the tile painting, the barbecue will be served on the beach, catered by Phil’s BBQ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The menu includes barbecue chicken or pork sandwiches, cole slaw and baked beans for $15 per plate. In addition to food, a beer and soda station will be available, as well as live steel drum music.
Tile painting opportunities will be offered four other times during the spring/summer. Purchase an artist-designed tile or paint your own from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 3, July 11, July 24 or Aug. 1 at the lifeguard tower parking lot.
Tiles measuring 4-inches-by-4-inches are priced as follows: one for $40, two for $75, three for $100 and four for $130. Family size tiles have been added for this event, measuring 8-inches-by-8-inches and cost $150 each. Bricks can also be purchased for $250 and inscribed with a personal message.
The Party For The Tower, a midsummer night of fun and frivolity, returns at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at En Fuego in Del Mar. Tickets for this annual event are $45. The evening includes a buffet dinner, no-host bar and a live auction.
