DEL MAR — More than 85 people, including Lions Club dignitaries, friends and 67 charter members, were on hand for an April 25 installation dinner at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to launch the new Del Sol Lions Club.
The club installed its first slate of officers, which included Linette Page, Treasurer John Page, President Dave Roberts, Secretary Mary Jane Boyd, Vice President Brian Sciutto, Carol Fleming, Tara Gordon, Lion tamer Julie Ustin, Membership Director Bulent Erol and Tail Twister Craig Garcia.
“It only took me five years, five months and 14 days to accomplish what we are celebrating here tonight, ” Julie Crawford, Lions district governor, said.
Five years ago, Crawford and others spent three months trying to form a club in one of the few areas in California not serviced by the Lions. Although their efforts at the time resulted in only two recruits, they didn’t give up.
“To launch a new club with 67 charter members is an extraordinary achievement,” said Bill Crawford, past international director who presided over the installation of charter members and officers.
What is different? Both the recognition of the times we are living in and the existence of members and community leaders who are anxious to “give back to the community” was the consensus among attendees.
The Del Sol Lions Club will serve Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley.
“We have so many needs in this area, we often don’t see it, or overlook it,” said Solana Beach City Councilman Dave Roberts, president of the Del Sol Club. “We welcome anyone who wants to serve and give back.”
The club meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m. at Sam’s Place Restaurant, 141 Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach. Anyone interested in joining the Del Sol Lions Club can contact Bulent Erol at [email protected]
