Local students’ great gizmos earn kudos

COAST CITIES — Rancho Santa Fe resident Gina Belli and Del Mar resident Reed Finley, eighth-grade students at Francis Parker School, won awards for inventive aircraft designs in Group II (grades five through eight) at the 2009 Regional Youth Aviation Art Competition. Belli’s steam-powered Hover Can design received Honorary Mention and Finley was awarded a third place for his solar-powered rocket. The contest is sponsored by the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the San Diego International Airport. The theme for the young artists was to envision a futuristic flying machine powered by alternative energy sources (not petroleum or fossil-based fuel). These original, environmentally friendly and futuristic aviation designs are being displayed at the San Diego Airport Terminal 2.
