CARLSBAD — The Junior Carlsbad, a run for youngsters 12 and under to be held April 4, emphasizes fun and fitness, not speed. Every child receives a finisher’s medal, goodie bag, a Sea Life Aquarium admission ticket and official race T-shirt.
“We’re really excited to be hosting our 20th year of the Junior Carlsbad,” said Rhonda Mulvey, event manager of the race. “It’s such a fun day for the whole community, and we love to get the kids outside with their friends and families to make it a day-long event.”
The Junior Carlsbad will kick off a weekend of races, hosting a morning of childrens’ races as a precursor to the Carlsbad 5000, a 5K event for adults April 5. There will be awards for the top three finishers at the Junior Carlsbad (ages 5 through 12), as well as awards for the first 250 finishers in each age group at the Carlsbad 5000. Registration is available online at www.juniorcarlsbad.com. A Health & Fitness Expo will run throughout the two days of events.
Participants can also register the day of the race, starting at 7 a.m. April 4. The kids’ races, which vary in length from one to a quarter-mile, run at 15-minute intervals throughout the morning. Participants are grouped based on age, and parents are invited to run with their children at no extra cost. Although start lines will vary because of differing course lengths, all races will finish at the corner of Roosevelt Street and Carlsbad Village Drive in downtown Carlsbad.
