RANCHO SANTA FE — Dozens of friends and family members of the Chabad at Rancho Santa Fe gathered at Morgan Run to celebrate Purim on March 10. The highlight was the presentation of two noted comedians, Mark Schiff and Avi Leiberman.
Schiff has opened for comedian Jerry Seinfeld on a number of occasions, and has been a guest on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” He currently lives in Los Angeles as does his opening act, Avi Leiberman, who is a stand-up comic who has had guest appearances on “The Craig Ferguson Show.” Both comics kept the crowd in stitches and poked fun at them as well. “I’ve been married for 19 years,” Schiff told the crowd. “And being married is like being on the Senate floor. Every day there’s a new law.”
Earlier in the evening, Michael Lustig told the group about The Rancho Santa Fe Community Torah that is being established. Lustig, born in San Diego, said, “I never thought I’d see the day that there was a Jewish community in Rancho Santa Fe.” When the Protective Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe was first written back in the 1920s, there were restrictions or “Gentlmen’s Agreements” as to who could live in the Covenent, which excluded “Negroes, Asians and Jews.” The Chabad of Rancho Santa Fe is now putting together a Torah of Rancho Santa Fe; however, Lustig said it’s expensive. He urged those in attendance to contribute.
On March 23, the Rancho Santa Fe Jewish Women’s Circle hosted a Jewish Meditation and Painting Workshop at the Fairbanks Clubhouse Patio. After a period of meditation, participants painted their “inner landscape” on a canvas, which they then took home. Neria Cohen, who hails from South Africa and has studied in Israel and worked in the film industry in New York, led the event. For the past 12 years she has toured the world giving these innovative art seminars.
On April 8, Chabad at Rancho Santa Fe will celebrate Passover. The lighting of the candles will be at 6:37 p.m. For more information, contact Rabbi Levi Raskin at (858) 756-7571 or visit the Web site at www.jewishrsf. com.
