A few hundred people participated in the 24th annual Del Mar Penguin Plunge, held Jan. 1 in front of the Lifeguard Headquarters. Sponsored by the Del Mar Lifeguards, the event challenged aspiring “penguins” to a chilly dip in the Pacific, as water temperatures hovered around 60 degrees. Participants were rewarded with doughnuts and cocoa from Poseidon Restaurant following the plunge.
