OCEANSIDE — A distraught man was hospitalized after a failed suicide attempt following a brief shootout with police Oct. 12, police said.
Officers said they found Patrick McDevitt, 38, around 9 p.m. near an apartment complex on Garrison Street, where they exchanged fire with him. While their rounds missed McDevitt, they said they heard a single shot shortly after and when they found McDevitt he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
McDevitt was life-flighted to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
Around 6 p.m. Oct. 12, McDevitt’s former girlfriend called police telling them he had tried to force her into his vehicle on Canyon Drive near Alta Loma Road. She said McDevitt was armed and threatening to kill himself.
His ex-girlfriend told police McDevitt, whom she broke up with more than a year ago, was still upset about their relationship’s end.
Neither the officers, whose names haven’t been released, nor McDevitt’s former girlfriend were injured during the incident, police said.
