ENCINITAS — The Encinitas Fire Department will celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with an outdoor expo 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Moonlight Beach parking lot at the corner of Third and C Street. Fire Prevention Week extends from Oct. 5 through Oct. 11, actively supported by fire departments across the country.
According to the National Fire Prevention Association, a fire occurs in a residential structure every 76 seconds in this country. The theme of Fire Prevention Week 2008 is “Prevent Home Fires.” This year’s campaign focuses on preventing all the leading causes of home fires — cooking, heating and electrical equipment, and smoking materials. In fact, cooking and heating are among the leading causes of home fires in the United States.
The event will feature a variety of activities including fire extinguisher demonstrations, a vehicle rescue exhibition using the Jaws of Life car-cutting tool and exhibits for the public to view, including a fire engine, ambulance, ASTREA helicopter and other rescue equipment. Children will have an opportunity to spot fire hazards in the interactive fire safety trailer, learn stop, drop and roll techniques and dress up in firefighter clothing. Safety information, food and assorted items will be provided free to those in attendance.
Residents requesting additional information about the event may call (760) 633-2800.
